Abstract

This thesis is intended to be a non-technical presentation of a subject that the average person knows very little about, namely, Illumination and how our eyes see things. It is written for the non-technical mind, hence as few units of measurement and such terms have been used, as it was possible. Many of the points have been merely touched upon, while others have been omitted as being beyond the scope of this Thesis.

This Thesis was prepared with the idea in mind that it would serve somewhat as a working manual for the numerous public schools in the state, to check up on their illumination, and with the Bulletins named in the Bibliography, make changes in their installations that will bring them up to modern standards. Also in this Thesis is a record of a mercury-vapor installation in one of the Drafting Rooms of the University of Tennessee that has given completes satisfaction. This installation was possible through the courtesy of Mr. Frank E, Keener, and the General Electric Vapor Lamp Co.
