Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a paper and pencil alcoholism screening inventory which would screen alcoholics from non-alcoholics. Four groups consisting of 50 subjects each were studied. The groups involved were an alcoholic group, a control group, a general population group, and a "drivers convicted of driving under the influence" (D.U.I) group. Reliability of the instrument was tested using the test-retest method, and the splithalf method. Validity was checked by comparing the mean of the alcoholic group with the means of the other three groups to determine if there was a difference. Counselors in the field of alcoholism evaluated the instrument on the content of the items used in the inventory. It was predicted that the inventory would successfully screen alcoholics from non-alcoholics. The hypothesis was supported by the data collected in the investigation.
