Volume 11, Issue 1 (2023)
From the General Editor:
I am very pleased to present Volume 11 of GAMUT: The Online Journal of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic.
It has been a considerable time span since the last volume of our journal was published. Over that period, as the COVID pandemic waxed and waned, there is no doubt that scholarly activity of all kinds weakened in terms of production, taking a back seat to other concerns. As we regain something more like normality in the past year, I hope that the writing and publication of scholarship is also returning to previous norms, and I take the arrival of this signal volume as an optimistic signal for the future.
There is, for now, just one article in this volume: a fascinating exploration of formal practices in the choruses of pop and rock songs from the recent past, which marries close discussion of sonic detail with insightful interpretive commentary in a way that demonstrates some of the best characteristics of our profession. I trust that we shall soon be able to add more articles of similar quality to the Volume.
I would like to thank all the members of the Publications Committee for their advice and support in bringing this volume to publication. In particular, I recognize the great work done by Dana DeVlieger, Chelsey Hamm, Scott Hanenberg, William O'Hara, Keith Salley, and Daniel Zimmerman to support GAMUT's mission over the past two years.
Best wishes and happy reading,
