Abstract
A description is given of a computer-based system which has attempted to combine surveillance capabilities with the traditional form of protocol used for planning of clinical trials in oncology and for the management of cancer patients. Data are presented to support the hypothesis that the use of patient care plans generated by this system has increased compliance with some protocol requirements. Earlier studies of computer-based surveillance systems are reviewed to demonstrate the potential value of such systems in clinical data management and in reduction of errors made in the treatment of patients. The beginnings of medical computing and the development of treatment protocols up to their present computer-driven forms are also reviewed.
