Abstract

This thesis reports the results of an ichthyofaunal survey of Lookout and South Chickamauga creek systems in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, conducted between October, 1979 and November, 1980. A total of 98 collections are included, 62 made by the author and 36 by other investigators. Collections were made using 3 X 1.5 m and 6 X 3 m small-mesh minnow seines. A total of 85 species are reported from both creeks combined, including 12 species which are very rare or were considered to be extirpated from either or both creek systems. Included in this thesis is an annotated list of species collected during this and earlier surveys, with notes on their habitat and distribution both within each creek system and in comparison with each other. A description of the study area and collection sites is included. Collections of Ichthyomyzon bdellium, I. greeleyi, Hybopsis storeriana, Notropis chrosomus, lirus, N. telescopus, Pimephales promelas, Catostomus commersoni, Perca flavescens, Percina sciera, and P. tanasi contribute new distributional records for these species in the Tennessee River drainage of northeast Georgia.
