Abstract

For the purpose of more accurately modeling heat transfer in asphaltic pavements, the thermal properties of some asphaltic pavements were determined in laboratory experiments. Six sets of samples were prepared: three having limestone aggregate, two having granite-gneiss aggregate, and one having expanded shale lightweight aggregate. It was found that the thermal properties (conductivity, specific heat, and diffusivity) depend greatly on the aggregate type and gradation and are less dependent on the asphalt content. Additionally, thermal properties were determined for 14 asphaltic pavement samples from two U. S. Air Force Bases.
