Abstract

Patterns of variation in morphology were compared to those determined by biochemical analysis for populations of Notropis camurus. Morphological divergence between two races of N. camurus was most evident in the character of body form and was great enough to warrant subspecific status for the two races. However, analysis of 46 alleles at 20 loci showed a pattern of variation discordant with that of morphology. This precludes any taxonomic decision in the absence of further analysis. Evidence for gene duplication and rediploidization was seen at the MDHl locus. Electrophoretic data also support previous conclusions based on morphology about the close affinity between N. camurus and N. galacturus.
