Abstract
The Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Graphics (ACM SIGGRAPH) was one of the first groups to be involved in computer graphics standards. Their subgroup, the Graphics Standards Planning Committee (GSPC), developed the Core system requirements and issued a final Core Status Report in 1979. Although the field of computer graphics still does not have a standard for graphics packages, the Core system is the most widely known and accepted planning document for such a standard.
This paper details the development of a Core standard graphics package for the Tektronix 4027 color graphics terminal, written in Pascal, at UTK.
A brief discussion of another standard, the Graphical Kernel System (GKS), is also included because this document is now an International Standards Organization (ISO) draft standard.
Portability, and the ease of adding other devices to this standard graphics package were the most immediate reasons for developing this package. It is hoped that this system will provide an initial testing environment for graphics system development at UT.
