Abstract
The pollution of the atmosphere is a serious problem in the operation of our cities. From an economic standpoint it represents a considerable loss. The soot in the atmosphere is so much wasted energy emitted by the stacks of power and heating plants. This is a waste which can be largely eliminated. Smoky atmosphere also discolors buildings and clothing. This item entails a large expenditure for laundering and cleaning purposes, The health of the people of a community is impaired by a smoke- laden atmosphere with its evil effects on the respiratory system. Plant and animal growth is affected because the sun's rays cannot penetrate the overhanging smoke clouds.
The purposes of this investigation are to find how the city of Knoxville compares with other cities in regard to its smoke situation, and to determine which sections of the city are most affected by the smoky conditions.
