Abstract
The purpose of writing this thesis is to familiarize the reader with the methods by which smoke emission can be reduced and eliminated and to give the ways in which to hendle the most essential elements that make for the success of any smoke abatement campaign. In carrying out this purpose the main body of the discussion is centered on the smoke abatement work in Knoxville as this city is a typical one which needs strict regulation in regard to smoke emission. Knoxville does not present any new problem in smoke abatement or have any distinct essential characteristic all its own, and as the writer has been connected with its Bureau of Smoke Regulation as a part-time worker for the past school year, and has a knowledge of the methods and results gained, makes it all the more desirable as a specific reference to smoke abatement in general.
Through the writing of this brief discussion of smoke abatement it is hoped that it will serve as a stimulus to others to carry this subject forward and to help make ithe cities of our land more efficient in the use of fuel and to make them cleaner and more healthful places in which to live.
