Abstract

A questionnaire was developed to assess the psychosocial impact of amniocentesis on expectant mothers. Parameters measured included feelings of anxiety, guilt, depression, and doubt. Additionally, client statisfaction with and adequacy of the amniocentesis counseling provided was determined.

The questionnaire was administered to 89 amniocentesis clients at the Birth Defects and Human Development Center of the University of Tennessee/Knoxville. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) developed by Charles Spielberger was also administered to see if anxiety perceived by the amniocentesis questionnaire correlated with anxiety perceived by the STAI.

The results of the survey indicate that the amniocentesis procedure is well received by women living in East Tennessee. The majority of the participants report great satisfaction with the amniocentesis counseling provided.

The ethical implications of obtaining informed consent as well as patterns of amniocentesis referral in East Tennessee are discussed.
