Abstract

An experimental and analytical study has been conducted to determine whether holographic interferometry methods can be used to determine the index of refraction of an object contained within a cylindrical containment tube. Numerical simulation and an experiment on the cylindrical tube are presented and results are reconstructed using Abel inversion with cubic spline fitting. Numerical Simulation showed that there exists about 4 % error at the edge of the hologram if the gases are assumed to be nonrefractive. Analysis of the numerical simulation and the experimental data are presented and reconstructions are compared to the expected values. Reconstructions result in less than 1 % error for the numerical simulation and less than 5 % error for the experiment. The results indicate that the technique can be applied to a phase object contained in a cylindrical tube if an imaging system is used, and the index of refraction distribution can be reconstructed with less than 5 % error.
