Abstract
This descriptive study of 71 women was designed to assess their knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer and their practice of breast self-examination.
The study revealed many deficits in knowledge of breast cancer; however, the overall belief in the value of breast self-exam was very high. Approximately half of the 71 subjects who returned a questionnaire said they practiced breast self-examination, but of these, very few did so monthly and many stated they were not confident they were using the correct method. The study suggests a need for community educational programs on breast cancer and breast self-examination which are thorough and allow adequate time for women to practice under supervision.
