Abstract

Historical records and manuscripts on East Tennessee, Tennessee, and the region are housed in the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection of the Knox County Public Library System. Located in the East Tennessee Historical Center, the McClung Collection has been a department of the Knox County Public Library System since 1921. The use of the collection is free to genealogists and researchers. All materials are for reference use only and do not circulate.

Access and location of the manuscript items and family genealogy files pose problems to users. Three indexes are included in the guide to facilitate use; these are personal name (often correspondence), family name, and subject. Information used to compile this guide was obtained from card files, accession sheets, calendars, and data from those who have processed the materials.

The result of this research is a descriptive guide only to those collections which have been processed to date. The great majority of the manuscript collections remain, at this time, only partially processed or not yet processed. By the very nature of acquisition of collections, this is an ongoing project. The collections included are those to which the researcher will have ready access with the help of staff members.
