Abstract
This thesis is a research activity designed to increase the knowledge and understanding of the implementation process of historic preservation. A detailed study is presented regarding the preservation efforts and outcomes in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The activities were quite successful due to a comprehensive planning procedure. The methods of accomplishment are disclosed so that others may be able to use similar tactics for preservation efforts in their town.
This study was accomplished through the use of library research, investigation of public documents, written correspondence, and interviews with major participants involved in the implementation of historic preservation in Jonesborough.
The major purpose of the study is to document the implementation efforts used to reach the preservation goals that were established in the planning phase of the process. Planners and other community members wishing to develop a preservation program should benefit from such an analysis.
First, the historical and physical setting is presented along with a summary of the preservation project. The techniques used to implement historic preservation and the approach used by Jonesborough is also documented. The findings and conclusions are presented in the last chapter.
