Abstract
This thesis presents the development of an algorithm for the control of the cross machine basis weight of a typical Fourdrinier paper machine. The algorithm compensates for the complex multivariable interactions between the actuators and the basis weight profile and considers constraints on the individual actuators as well as the stress imposed on the slice bar by adjacent actuators. Presented in this thesis is also the development of a detailed dynamic model and simulation of the wet end section of a paper machine. The simulation is used in the testing of the control algorithm under a number of scenarios.
