Abstract
The purpose of this study was to recommend steps or components needed for a successful stress management program for oncology nurses. An extensive review of the literature was conducted, and the results reported around eight organizing principles or needed coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms were social support, participatory management, educational programs, role definition, doctor/nurse relationship, improved patient/nurse relationship, education and information for the patient and family, and patient and family participation in treatment. From these eight coping strategies, six steps to implement a training program were recommended: (1) placement or employment of an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist; (2) development of an educational program; (3) redefinition of the role of oncology nurse; (4) placement of a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse; (5) development of informational materials; and (6) development of educational training for patients/families which focuses on self-care.
