Abstract

This thesis summarizes the engine and airframe performance characteristics of the McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company (MDHC) 530F PLUS helicopter. Flight test data is presented along with analysis and discussion of the test results. Engine performance data from two alternative engines are combined with the airframe performance data to optimize the engine and airframe combination for the armed scout mission. Engine and airframe matching is discussed, both in general, and as specifically applied to the MDHC 530F PLUS. The MDHC 530F PLUS with its Allison Model 250-C30 engine was characterized by outstanding hover performance but very poor range, endurance, and combat radius. Although the aircraft demonstrated excellent potential for the armed scout mission, it required correction of some or all of its deficiencies before it could be considered satisfactory. Utilizing flight test data from the Allison Models T63-A-700 and 250-C20B alternative engines, the author compared aircraft performance with the three different engines installed. The Allison Model 250-C20B engine was found to be the optimum engine to install in the MDHC 530F PLUS airframe for the assigned mission. The author also recommends the addition of auxiliary fuel tanks and the No Tail Rotor design to further improve the performance characteristics of the aircraft.
