Abstract

The Simple Network Management Protocol was originally designed with security mechanisms which have been thought of as relatively insecure. Extensions to the SNMP network management framework designed to provide authentication and privacy services were proposed early in 1991. The work herein details the experience of implementing the new security mechanisms in the ISODE environment, the impact that the security mechanisms have upon the SNMP network management framework, and a comparison between two competing digest generation algorithms.
