Abstract

This study analyzed the environmental issues associated with rapidly growing communities. The research involved the use of data from Madison, Alabama, a small community undergoing intense development pressures from the expanding City of Huntsville. Since the community had very little environmental information available, the research identified the major issues by using interviews and data from previous research efforts. This compilation of data led to the development of alternatives that could be used to guide growth into areas that cause little environmental damage. It was concluded that the city should attempt to mitigate problems concerning drainage patterns, groundwater supply and quality, and airport noise. It was also concluded that greater intergovernmental cooperation was necessary to achieve higher protection standards in the community.
