Abstract

This research investigated the feasibility of using thin film aluminum mirrors or phthalocyanine dyes to develop an optical limiting system to protect eyes and sensors from laser light. The mirrors are tested with laser light of 532 nanometers, in the middle of the visible spectrum. The dyes are tested with a dye laser to examine their effectiveness throughout the visible spectrum. Data are collected electronically and analyzed with a personal computer. Results indicate that separately, neither the mirrors nor the dyes attain the desired criteria. When combined in one optical system, results indicate that the desired level of protection is attainable. It is therefore possible to design an apparatus which will make use of these results to achieve the desired protection.
