Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze Verve, a musical composition for large orchestra, for its rhythmic, melodic and formal content and to compare these musical characteristics with other compositions in an effort to identify the composers' influences and place Verve in the historical context of the Twentieth Century. The rhythmic, melodic and formal aspects of the composition are derived from a motive in which specific rhythm and melodic contours are retained as its identity is developed. A comparison of these parameter developments with other compositions will reflect an influence in the utilization of the techniques of Bartók, Stravinsky and Prokofieff showing Verve to be stylistically related to works of the early Twentieth Century, 1910-1935.
