Abstract

This thesis presents a tutorial on the application of fuzzy control. A literature search provided much of the background for the work. Proficiency in implementing and tuning fuzzy controllers was gained through extensive computer simulation. The salient points of controller implementation and tuning are presented. The fuzzy controller has characteristics comparable to classical PD and lead compensators. With modification fuzzy controllers can achieve characteristics comparable to classical PI and lag compensators. It is shown that the PD type fuzzy controller can exceed the performance of its classical counterparts. Steady state error prediction is demonstrated for a class of fuzzy controller. The PI type fuzzy controller possesses disturbance rejection characteristics superior to those of the PD type fuzzy controller.
