Abstract

An important part of linear programming is the transportation problem. The transportation problem minimizes costs by selecting the optimal path for transporting goods from a set of origins to a set of destinations. A discussion of linear programming, and the simplex method are presented. This is followed by theory supporting the balanced transportation problem, methods of finding the optimal solution, variations of the transportation problem and selected applications.
