Abstract
In this study the organization and actions of the Department of State and its officials are researched and analyzed for the purpose of determining the impact upon the repatriation of American citizens from European nations during World War II. Of particular interest is the Special War Problems Division headed by Breckinridge Long under the auspices of the Department of State. The personal biases of officials serving in the Special War Problems Division, property and personal rights of Jewish-Americans in Europe, criteria for what constitutes authentic claims to American citizenship, and the result of these matters are the questions of which this thesis is composed.
