Abstract
A New Wcnder, A Woman Never Vext is one of the three plays written by William Rowley alone. Published in 1632, probably written and performed between 1611 and 1614, A. New Wonder is Rowley's first mature work, coming between his early apprentice plays, such as The Travels of the Three English Brothers or A Shoemaker, A Gentleman, and his later successful collaborations, such as A Fair Quarrell or The Changeling.
This dissertation presents an accurate text of A New Wonder, A Woman Never Vext, arrived at through collation of fourteen copies of the 1632 quarto (five original copies and photostats of nine others), Also collated was one copy of each subsequent edition of the play. All variants and emendations are recorded.
The dissertation also contains a full bibliographic description and analysis of the 1632 quarto, a literary introduction to the play, and commentary on all obsolete, difficult, or conventional terms, constructions, and practices.
