Abstract
The major purpose of the study was to identify and validate the importance of competencies needed by the industrial teacher educators in Iraq. The secondary purposes of the study were: (1) to compare perceptions of Iraqi industrial teacher educators and American industrial teacher educators concerning the competencies needed by such educators, and (2) to recommend some guidelines for the development and improvement of the graduate industrial teacher education program offered at The Iraqi University of Technology.
To meet the above purposes of the study, two questions and one hypothesis were stated. The questions to be answered by the study were: What are the competencies needed by Iraqi industrial teacher educators? What are the most important competencies rated by American industrial teacher educators? The null hypothesis (H0) of the study was:
"There was no significant difference in perceptions between the Iraqi industrial teacher educators and the American industrial teacher educators concerning the importance of the identified competency statements grouped in clusters."
The sample for the study consisted of two groups of industrial teacher educators from the United States and Iraq. The questionnaire, together with the cover letter, was mailed to 75 American industrial teacher educators, and 55 translated copies were mailed to the Iraqi educators.
A five-point Likert-type scale was used to measure the importance of the competencies included in four clusters labeled as General, Research, Service, and Teaching Competencies.
To test the null hypothesis and to answer the two questions of the study, the nonparametric Median Sign Test was used. For data analysis, the researcher used the services of the computer laboratory in the Technological and Adult Education Department of the College of Education at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The level of significance chosen for the testing of the null hypothesis was .01.
The findings of the study were based on the statistical analysis of data shown that out of the 75 identified and validated competency statements grouped in four cluster areas, 42 competencies or 55 percent were rated significantly different by the American industrial teacher educators and Iraqi industrial teacher educators.
Several recommendations were extracted from the study, based on the data analysis and the review of literature; A model for improving the training and evaluation of education personnel was suggested. Ranked competencies were recommended to be followed as a guideline for developing, implementing, and preparing the graduate programs for industrial teacher educators in Iraq.
