Abstract
The literature on communication apprehension (OA) was shown to be relevant to occupational type behaviors. Super's self-concept implementation theory (Super, 1951, 1953) previously has asserted that job satisfaction is related to the degree to which the job and the individual are compatible. In order to examine the occupational behavior of individuals as a function of their OA, a model of OA, job level held, communication requirements of the job, job satisfaction, and career change activities was developed. A total of 501 employees who had attended a Career Planning Workshop were sent a questionnaire designed, among other things, to investigate the model. Eleven out of the 14 correlational main effects proposed by the model were significant and in the proposed direction. The interaction of CA and communication requirements was significantly related to three of the five job satisfaction scales. All but one of the relevant LISREL path weights were significant and in the expected direction. Implications for practice and for theory were discussed, along with areas that need more research.
