Abstract

Because Earl Leslie Griggs's six-volume edition, Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1956-1971), lacks a comprehensive index, scholars are severely impeded when using this important work. Realizing that a fully-functioning, comprehensive index would greatly enhance the edition but also realizing such a project might take years to complete, I have completed a comprehensive index to the first two volumes: A Comprehensive Index to the First Two Volumes of Earl Leslie Griggs's Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The remaining volumes will be completed at a later date. The index comprises both the keyword and subject methods of indexing. It includes names of persons, placenames, keywords, and direct quotations and is also fully annotated with birth and death dates and publication dates. By increasing Griggs's previous index, which accessed only one percent of the texts, to access sixteen percent of the texts, I have brought the index in line with current indexing standards and have made the texts infinitely more serviceable to scholars.
