Abstract
Recovery is the goal of chemical dependence treatment, but little is known empirically about the process from the perspective of those receiving treatment and embracing recovery. Through the use of in-depth interviews, genograms, and medical record analyses, this research investigates the "story" of individual men identified as working a successful recovery program from chemical dependence. These research participants received treatment from either, or both, the inpatient and outpatient programs at the alcohol and drug treatment center at a university medical center. Using these qualitative research methods, their stories emerge from the data. Their stories tell of their recovery process, and the events, people, and insights ("success points") in treatment and recovery that helped them experience a transformation in their lives.
