Department Head: Misty Anderson
Beginning in Fall of 2025, we are adding an undergraduate concentration in Publishing, which comes with an internship at UT Press, to our other English concentrations in Creative Writing; Literature; Rhetoric, Writing and Linguistics; and Professional and Technical Writing. We also host certificate programs in TESOL and Digital Humanities, and we take part in interdisciplinary programs in Global Studies, Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies, Cinema Studies, Digital Humanities, and the new Visual and Interactive Storytelling program. Our scholarships page tells you more about the many funding sources for our majors. Our new Odysseys program gifts First Year Studies students with a book of short stories to mark the beginning of their careers at UT and a masterclass to help them think about the power of education. We also continue to develop our graduate degrees to help our Masters, MFA, and Doctoral students thrive. We’re ready to reach students where they are and help them develop as writers, readers, and thinkers.
Locally, we are proud to be a part of the Big Ears Festival, Fredrick Douglass Day programming, the Flagship College Admissions Essay Tutoring Program run out of the department’s Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center, the YWCA’s Phyllis Wheatley Center, festive events like the Regency Ball, and UT’s Denbo Center for the Humanities and Arts. We invite you to join us at any of the public events on our departmental events calendar, found at the bottom of our home page.
