Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology

Department Chair: Engin Serpersu, Interim Head

What is responsible for the aging of cells and organisms? How does the brain control daily rhythms of physiology and behavior? What do protein structures teach us about drug design? These are just a few of the fundamental questions being pursued in BCMB. Emerging technologies such as imaging and biosensors, combined with powerful computational approaches, are opening up new windows into the inner workings of living organisms and their molecules.

BCMB offers courses in cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, plant biology, and neurobiology - emphasizing the interrelated nature of these topics to address both fundamental and applied questions in biology. This integrated approach is essential for competitive training leading into the health professions, teaching, as well as the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
