The evaluation of an optometric vision training program using a single subject multiple baseline research design
The application of classical large group designs to evaluate the effectiveness of optometric vision training has failed to provide a realistic picture regarding the effects of optometric vision training. For this reason the need for an alternative research methodology was apparent and theoretically the single case experimental research design methodology appeared to better meet the needs of this applied optometric area. A single case multiple baseline experimental design was employed across two elementary school children in an optometric vision training practice in order to measure the effectiveness of a specific optometric treatment package. Over twenty visual, academic, and visual-motor assessment procedures were developed -in order to repeatedly measure the effects of vision training over time. Pre-post testing and follow-up questionnaires were obtained to further .substantiate the results observed. A five month follow-up was performed to measure the lasting effect of the treatment package. The results of this study indicate the effectiveness of this optometric vision training package to directly train specific functional visual skills involving accomodation, binocularity, fixational abilities, and pursuits and to improve a specific type of visual-motor functioning without directly training the task. These results can be directly attributed to the optometric vision training package with experimental reliability. Follow-up results were variable, with the majority of the treatment effects maintained. Results suggest the appropriateness of the specific assessment procedures to measure visual skills repeatedly over time. The single case experimental design appears to be an effective methodology for evaluating optometric vision training in an optometric practice.
