Costuming period plays : designing a modern production of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex

This study represents an examination of the state of the art of costuming the period play for the modern theatre, along with a discussion of the process of designing the costumes for a modern staging of Oedipus Rex. The production was an attempt to take the classic tragedy beyond the limitations of the 'museum piece," making it speak to the modern audience on more familiar terms. The idea behind the production was that a combination of ancient and modern elements would break down some of the barriers separating today's audience from the essential spirit of the Greek theatre. The thesis presents a discussion of the function of the theatrical costume, examines modern theories of costuming period plays, and evaluates the costumes for Oedipus Rex in light of these criteria.
