Abstract

The purpose of this study is to inspect selected techniques currently used to start and accelerate large AC induction motors applied as the drive for coal conveyor belts. The function of the coal conveyor is reviewed and a physical system is described as incorporated in the coal handling operation of a modern TVA coal fired steam plant. Alternate forms of drive motors are discussed and various methods of controlling the accelerating characteristics of the motors are analyzed with the results presented as a basis for a comparison relationship.
