Abstract
An electro-optical method of measuring particulate mass concentration and approximate size distribution is described with emphasis on calibration procedures. The Continuous Aerosol Monitor (CAM), a microprocessor-based, forward-scattering electro-optical instrument, is characterized for cotton dust particles in textile mills. Optical microscopy is utilized in determining the cotton dust characteristics to provide insight into and calibration for a unique compensation technique implemented in the CAM microprocessor to compute large particle mass. Geometrical properties of cotton fibers verify the experimentally determined form of the large particle compensation algorithm. Pulse height analyzer calibration is established on both a number and mass basis. The resulting calibration curve slopes are in agreement with theoretical system response. Also, vertical elutriator penetration efficiency is determined.
