Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the works of Mathias Georg Monn, a composer identified as an important member of the first Viennese school, can be considered a link between the High Baroque and the Classic styles. Musicologists have long argued over exactly what part mid-eighteenth century composers played in developing the Classic style, as typified by the works of Haydn and Mozart, and an examination of a composition by Monn and Mozart in the same genre should prove to point out those aspects of style similar or disjunct in each man's work, and to answer the question regarding the stylistic leanings of Monn. Monn's works have long been given credence as important works of the midcentury period, and in demonstrating successfully the link between Monn and Mozart stylistically, new evidence in support of a developmental chain between the Viennese school and the Classic style masters will be brought to light.
