Because of its role in the development of the modern German novel, Rainer Maria Rilke's Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge has received much critical attention, especially in the postwar years. The purpose of this study is to facilitate the treatment of the secondary literature to the novel. The first chapter of the study presents a short discussion of Malte's genesis and a survey of the secondary literature which appeared before l945. In the second chapter an annotated bibliography of the critical literature which appeared during the time span l945-1977 is presented. Bibliographical entries are arranged chronologically.

In the third chapter tendencies of the postwar Malte scholarship are discussed. One notes that the interpretation of Malte often depends on whether or not the individual critic believes Malte reaches his goal of writing "objectively." Critics who maintain that Malte does not learn to write objectively usually see the work as a failure.

In the end bibliography, the annotated critical literature of the second chapter is arranged alphabetically along with other works used in the research for the study. Numbers in parentheses at the end of entries refer to the position of an article or book in the annotated bibliography.
