Abstract

There is a new and old boiler plant at the Brookside Mills. Tests were made on the old plant, which consisted of a battery of three 150-H.P., return tubular boilers, manufactured by the Walsh & Weidner Boiler Company of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The boilers were completely encased in steel and were hand fired. They were newly installed, having been in regular use for at least a week before these tests were made. Two additional boilers of like type are being installed. Smoke preventers are attached to each boiler. These boilers supply steam to a 975-H.P. compound Corliss engine.

The object of these tests was to determine the efficiency under the usual working conditions and also to study the economic relations of smoke abatement. To determine the latter it was necessary to make two tests. Accordingly a test was made on the 7th and 8th of May with the smoke preventers attached and detached. Throughout both tests the fireman handled the furnaces in his ac-customed manner. The conditions were the same for both tests with the exception of the smoke preventers being attached and detached.
