A multi-period linear programming model for optimally scheduling the distribution of food-aid in West Africa
One of the major barriers to the use of African transportation systems as a medium for food-aid transportation is the washout of transport links during the rainy season. In this paper, the effects of the rainy season on the 1985 distribution effort are reviewed, and a planning model which accounts for rainy season effects in scheduling the transportation of food-aid is presented.
In particular, a multi-period storage and distribution linear programming model is developed. The model, which is one component of the Food For Peace Inland and Emergency Distribution System, determines the best use of existing transportation and storage facilities for food-aid distribution in Africa. Analysis of transport system and storage facility improvements are also discussed.
