Abstract

Elementary school principals and teachers are often unaware of the level of pressure and turmoil that can erupt from state and church issues related to the role of Christmas in public elementary schools. This qualitative research describes interviews with administrators, teachers and parents at four public elementary schools, religious leaders and church/state scholars. Educators can be faced without much warning with a paralyzing effect on their educational environment. This study can serve in some ways as a warning to educators to become more sensitive and knowledgeable on their own school's religious diversity. The knowledge of possible reactions by various religious and non-religious groups may offer educators some guidance in making future choices.
