Abstract
The existence, shape, and polarization characteristics of the backscattered peak due to the opposition effect are investigated using an optical system of greater resolution than has been used in previously reported studies. . The samples studied, many previously unexamined, include some organic materials. Even with improved system resolution, opposition effect peaks produced by some samples are not fully resolved.

Three theoretical problems are investigated. Two of these address the scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by single infinite circular cylinders. In the first, the cylinder is embedded in a homogeneous half-space. In the second, the cylinder is adjacent to a homogeneous halfspace. The third addresses the scattering produced by three identical, non-coplanar, dielectric cylinders. A backscattered peak, comparable to that of the opposition effect, is obtained for cylinders with diameters comparable to the wavelength of the incident radiation.
