Anisotropic tensile and notched bend properties of an Al-Al₃Ni directionally solidified fiber reinforced composite

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to directionally solidify large A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy ingots, and to study the tensile and notched bend properties of the alloy, This particular system was selected for the following reasons: (1) high purity aluminum and nickel are readily available, (2) the alloy has a low melting point (640°C), (3) when directionally solidified, a fiber reinforced composite is produced.
Using the procedures developed in this investigation, A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy ingots having dimensions of approximately ½” x 4" x 4" were directionally solidified. The tensile strength of the composite was found to vary in a manner similar to that predicted for mechanically formed fiber reinforced composites, The fracture modes were also similar to those predicted for mechanically formed fiber reinforced composites. The notched bend strength of the composite was found to decrease for.fiber orientations up to 45°, and then remain constant for fiber orientations from 45° to 90°. In all cases fracture was initiated by the cracking of large A13Ni blades within cell boundaries.
