About the Conference

The purpose of this conference is to offer a forum for research and discussion of issues affecting the African-American culture. This conference features a nationally known keynote speaker; in addition to a diverse set of workshops and panel discussions led by undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, administrators and members of the local, regional and national communities. The conference is open to all students and takes place at the University of Tennessee. The conference started in 2005, and now boasts an average of 300 participants. Pre-registration is required for participation in this event. This conference is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Life in collaboration with the UTK chapter of NAACP. Annually a host of diverse student organizations, university departments, and corporations help to sponsor this event.

Call for Proposals

We encourage the submission of innovative and engaging program proposals for the 20th Annual Conference scheduled for Saturday, February 1st. Our 2025 theme for the 20th Anniversary of the Black Issues Conference is Legacy and Innovation: Reflecting on Our Past, Embracing Our Present, and Envisioning Our Future. Some topics of interest include, but are not limited to: The Role of African Ancestry and Cultural Heritage, The Civil Rights Movement and Its Lasting Impact, The Power of Black Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Redefining Education: From the Black Intellectual Tradition to Modern Innovations, The Intersection of Technology and Black Culture, Black Music and Arts: A Legacy of Resistance and Transformation, Black Health and Wellness: From Historical Trauma to Healing Innovations, Political Legacy and Future Visions of Black Governance, The Global Black Diaspora: Bridging Past, Present, and Future, Environmental Justice and Sustainability in Black Communities, Redefining Black Masculinity and Femininity in Modern Society, Black Youth and the Future: Empowerment, Education, and Activism, The Influence of Black Spirituality on Society, Reparations: A Legacy of Restitution and Racial Justice, The Importance of Black Representation in Media and Entertainment.
