Smart Utility Poles
Abstract
One way of achieving a more resilient smart grid is to place more sensors in the field. Unfortunately, single purpose sensors are expensive to deploy and require a significant investment in communications infrastructure. An alternative would be to deploy a flexible, low cost, open platform devices that could do multiple tasks and either take action locally to maintain the condition of the grid or only report by exception to the back office. By developing a clever, modular design and an open platform, the devices could multitask with the platform gathering data from various sensors added on as needed.
