Significance of solution cleavage in the Chapman Ridge Anticline, Tennessee
The Lenoir Limestone of Middle Ordovician age contains a coarse set of axial planar solution cleavage exposed in the Chapman Ridge anticline southeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. Three scales of folding are recognized in the anticline: F1 domal warping, F2 parasitic folding, and F3 internal folding. folds are externally Cleavage is axial planar to each level of folding and demonstrates progressive deformation and preservation through rotation. Distribution of cleavage within the F3 anticline is inhomogeneous. Cleavage develops in four intensity types (none, low, moderate, high) on the basis of its qualitative attributes and its mean spacing. Shortening can be determined from thin section analysis and reaches So% in rocks with 'high' cleavage intensities. Examination of cleavage intensity demonstrates a fold controlled stress distribution. Cleavage is not found in similar outcrops of Lenoir which have undergone simple thrusting without folding. , Regional placement of solution cleavage is with frontal zone fabrics of a polyphase folded fault system. Overprinting of fold controlled cleavage by the emplacement of the Dumplin Valley thrust sheet conclusively places the Dunplin Valley fault kinematically younger than domal warping of the F, anticline.
