Abstract

A symbol recognition scheme capable of classifying complex symbols such as those found in engineering drawings is presented. The symbols are complex in the sense that each is composed of both line segments and solid regions. The technique employs structural methods supported by a model directed control structure combined with traditional data driven strategies. The system's modular design encourages parallel execution while providing a framework for future experimentation with system components.
