Abstract

The assembling of the Electron-Impact Fluorescence Spectroscopy (EIFFS) instrument was first performed. The optimum settings of the instrument were sought by monitoring nitrogen peaks of the fluorescence spectra. The instrument was tested using water and methanol, and the observed spectra were compared with the existing literature spectra. Then studies of ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, acetaldehyde, and acetone were performed by means of the EIFFS technique. The studies included (1) fluorescence spectrum measurements, (2) excitation curve measurements at and around the threshold energies, (3) excitation curve measurements in the high energy region, and (4) pressure dependence measurements. From those measurements the analytical feasibility of the EIFFS technique was discussed.
