Development and application of a personal computer based finite element program
A finite element program written in FORTRAN is developed for use on personal computers. The program is capable of modelling triangular, rectangular, truss, and beam elements. Program design allows other types of elements to be included with a minimum of difficulty. Verification of the program is accomplished by comparing execution results with theoretical results for sample model structures.
A structural analysis of dry van highway trailers of the type used by railroads in intermodal service is used to demonstrate program employment. Findings from this analysis indicate that relatively high structural stresses are produced during the lifting of these trailers onto railroad flat cars if the lift supports are improperly placed.
