Abstract
The purpose of this research was to improve upon the path selection phase of the current methodology of corridor routing. Although the study was focused on transmission line corridors, the principles involved could be applied to most other types of utility corridors, including highways, railroads and pipelines.
There were four basic areas which were developed: (1) a method for defining and incorporating non-orthogonal arcs and their subsequent use in solving for the corridor of minimum environmental impact; (2) several methods for finding alternative corridors that are close-to-optimal in impact value but significantly different in configuration; (3) casting corridor routing as a multi-objective problem and generating trade-off curves; (4) an interactive graphics program that allows a decision-maker or analyst to input any conceivable corridor and have that corridor evaluated in several objectives.
